Simply brilliant!

The 80s saw the promising birth of a new genre of videogames: the graphic adventures. The next decade would be their golden age, opened in 1990 by the Lucas Arts (yes, the same of Star Wars) title considered by many as the best videogame of the genre: The Secret of Monkey Island. It narrates the adventures of Guybrush Threepwood and his eagerness for becoming the most feared pirate in the Caribbean, which will be continued in subsequent titles of the saga (the whole of it of high quality).

If it’s risky to try to please the fans of any saga by its escape room version, it is even more risky if that saga is the base of their development. And, if it’s difficult to please them, it is even more difficult to surprise them. Congratulations! Madness Toledo and Mad Mansion, you got it!

The Mystery of Scum Island will make you live a tremendous adventure of very, very high quality, either if you are fans of the saga or not (difficult task, but more than accomplished in this game). That said, all fans will enjoy many nods and surprises in the universe created inside those walls right in Toledo’s old town (door-to-door with a good restaurant). The devoted who want to replay (or play for the first time) the videogames before visiting the Scum Island can do it in PC or smartphone with the emulator SCUMMVM (ROMs available here).

For curiosity lovers, “Scum” has an obvious relation with the motor of the Monkey Island saga’s videogames called SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion, initially created by Lucas Arts for the Maniac Mansion game).

Madness Toledo is half an hour from Madrid by train, 50 minutes by car (with the option to stop halfway in Yuncos to visit Cinescape). In order to get there, you’ll have to enter Toledo’s old town, which is a real gem. And it is very difficult to find escape rooms of this style and theme of so high quality. It’s definitely worth it.
